What is Emotional Intelligence & Why Does It Matter?

Dr. Daniel Goleman, renowned author of “Working with Emotional Intelligence”, defines EI as “The capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships”. Research has revealed that EI is a better predictor of success than IQ, meaning that much of the training and development that we've engaged in over the decades, focusing on memorizing "right answers", may have distracted us from developing a critical set of skills.

It turns out, as you suspected, that the "soft" skills aren't so soft after all. They are traceable to the bottom line performance of every individual and every organization, and the longterm success of a leader is dependent upon them.

Emotional Intelligence consists of 18 distinct competencies, grouped into four clusters, as follows:

The EI Competency Model

Assessment

The Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI)

The ECI is a 72-item, 360-degree assessment instrument that examines the 18 competencies corresponding with the emotional competency model. It accommodates an unlimited number of raters (self, peers, bosses, employees, others) and is administered via the Internet. Available in five languages, the ECI offers verbatim comments and workforce, unit or team composite reports.

What makes the ECI unique in comparison to other 360-degree instruments?

"The ECI is the only instrument that incorporates the full depth of my research and that of my colleagues.Other instruments use the words "Emotional Intelligence" but the ECI is the genuine article."

- Daniel Goleman, Ph.D, author of Working With Emotional Intelligence

Most 360-degree assessments (and most training events) focus on Relationship Management and Social Awareness, the right-hand side of the diagram above. This approach, while useful, is incomplete as it overlooks the importance of the competencies found in Self-Awareness and Self-Management. The extensive research conducted by Drs. Goleman, Burckle and Boyatzis confirms what you and I believe intuitively, that Self-Awareness (ie- understanding the gap between how I see myself and how the world sees me) and Self-Management (ie- self-control) are pre-requisites for Social Awareness and effective Relationship Management.

The ECI focuses exclusively on resolving this powerful discrepancy. It is the first step in the process of enhancing and balancing ones' leadership skills.

Feedback Analysis

Securing a clear understanding of the survey responses and their significance is essential to the commitment to improving. Upon completion of the survey, we will schedule a feedback session with you to review the results in detail. The ECI is designed to be administered only by accredited professionals.

Individual Coaching (Click on Executive Coaching link for further information)

One-on-one coaching to translate "understanding" into "action" is the next step. The process begins with creation of a Development Plan for improvement in specific competencies. The Pathfinder?, an online personal development tool used in conjunction with the ECI, will be utilized to help users better understand their competency feedback, create a specific plan and monitor development progress.

Organizational Goal Alignment

Beginning with a 1/2-day briefing immediately after the Feedback Sessions, we will facilitate the ongoing process of connecting the ECI feedback directly to the performance goals of your organization. This is where the examination of personal and organizational patterns of behavior, along with their sources, causes and effects begins to take shape, leading to development of strategic organizational solutions.
